Description

Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ syn. Ligularia tussilaginea, commonly known as the Giant Leopard plant is a lush large leaved evergreen perennial originating from Japan. With attractive deep green rounded kidney shaped leaves often 30cm or more in diameter growing in neat tight clumps which in late summer are topped with sprays of daisy like orange- yellow flowers there is a lot to like about  Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’. I like to plant it amongst palms, bamboos and tree ferns as exotic looking ground cover in my jungly garden where it grows happily in dappled shade. I have also seen it used as a stand alone plant in contempory plantings against rendered walls in urban courtyards and roof gardens. So to summarise I’d say Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ is an adaptable easy to grow plant that does best when given fertile moisture retentive soil where it can cope with full sun through to dappled shade. Similar to its native Japanese habit of growing on the banks of steams and ditches.

Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ requires minimum maintenance, like most perennials it will benefit from occasional top dressings of fertilizer and an annual mulch of good compost in the Autumn or Winter. Being an evergreen I generally prune in late spring to tidy up Winter damaged leaves. I’d also recommend if you live in colder parts of the U.K a little protection from severe weather such as snow would be beneficial, a straw mulch on top of the leaves to protect the crowns.
