Description
Dryopteris erythrosora var. prolifica is another superb selection of the Japanese Shield fern already a beautiful fern, prolifica has increased pink colouration to the new growth, the large glossy leaves held upright in profusion. Though basically green in colour, throughout the seasons they continually have tints of pink, red and coppery tones. This form is known for its increased ability to spread, producing bulbils forming a beautiful clump.
Dryopteris erythrosora var. prolifica is what we consider as an almost evergreen fern meaning that foliage is maintained thoughout most of the year and tends to collapse just prior to new growth each spring. It is also particularly useful in conditions that are often too bright, tolerating reasonable exposure to sun as long as the soil or compost remains moist.
As with all Dryopteris, prolifica makes a medium to large sized specimen fern, often reaching 60cm or more high, is fully hardy and suitable for both planting in the ground or as a container specimen. Tolerant of most fertile moisture reterntive, but not waterlogged soils. As with most ferns, if in doubt add good compost when planting.
