Description
Cylindropuntia kleiniae is an outrageous cacti with bags of character. Otherwise known as ‘Klein’s Pencil Cactus’ this cacti froms an intricate structure made of up knarly pencil like ‘stems’. Each stem has a mixed arrangement of of fleshy spines alongside fierce woody spines which look a little like cocktail sticks. Beneath those are little glochids (barbs) which are similar to those found on Opuntia.
Naturally found in Northern Mexico and Soutwestern United States, Cylindropuntia is accustomed to dry sandy and rocky soils in warm conditions so with that in mind, this fabulous plant requires a warm and bright position. Ideal as a conservatory plant or for a sunny windowsill and may be placed outside during the warm months.
If you’re fortunate, you may enjoy pretty, pink-pale pink flowers which form during summer – chances of flowering are increased by the plant having good temperatures. These may then be followed by red-green fruits.
As with most cacti and succulents, we recommend planting in a free-draining gritty compost. Will respond well to fortnightly feeding with cacti and succulent feed.
These plants are home grown here at Big Plant Nursery in our environmentally friendly peat free compost
**For mail order please be aware that we will wrap these plants lovingly and as carefully as possible. Occasionally some small pieces may fall off but this won’t be harmful to the plant at all – it’s a fabulous plant so don’t be put off**
