Description
Arundo donax ‘Variegata’ is a striking white and green variegated form of the ‘Giant Reed’ a real showy statement plant growing between 120 to 200cm high each summer with lush jungly foliage it’s a bold plant that demands attention. Best treated as a summer feature plant the woody stems look great stripped of leaves during early winter once the colour has faded then cut down to the ground in spring just before new growth appears. Sounds compilicated but it really isn’t, you can just leave them but really they look a bit tatty like this during the winter and if left the stems from the prevous year will regrow from the leaaf nodes which again loses the appeal. So please cut them back each spring!
Once considered tender it’s probably best to mulch the roots with good compost each autumn giving the dormant winter crowns protection from cold, particularly if you live in a cold spot.
