Elegia tectorum

Description

A wonderful member of the Restio family native to South Africa and often used as roof thatching hence the common name ‘Cape Thatching Reed’.

Elegia tectorum is a fabulous grass-like perennial with bright green stems reaching up to 2-2.5m in height.  The stems have striking red-mahogany bands.  During the autumn, delecate , compact rich-brown flower heads appear which stand out against the vivid green stems.

Plant your Elegia in full sun and well-drained soil for best results.  May also be grown in containers to great effect.  Keep moist during summer months.
