Description
Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’ is a fabulous member of the Ginger family (Zingiberaceae)being native to the forests of Eastern Asia, this wonderfully exotic looking Alpinia is prized for its wonderful display of bold, variegated leaves which are bright green streaked with yellow. Although not fully hardy Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’ grows very well outdoors during the summer months creating a splash of bright jungly foliage in the exotic border. I like to plant them in dappled shade the leaves not only get larger but have more intense colour too. When the weather gets cooler and frost threatens Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’ makes an excellent house plant and will thrive in a bright spot indoors.
The beautifully variegated foliage is reason enough to afford Alpinia zerumbert ‘Variegata’ a place in your garden or home, however, on rare occasion, particularly happy plants may send up fabulous splays of white-pink flowers which have bold yellow and cerise centres.
**Please note that plants sent out during autumn and winter months will be cut back – this is of no detriment to the plant**
