Description
Daphniphyllum macropodum is a beautiful and unusual large evergreen shrub or small tree, prized for the glossy deep green leaves which are Rhododendron-like in appearance. The leaves have wonderfully bright pink-red stems which are noticable particularly during the winter months where leaves turn downwards or ‘droop’. The young foliage emerges during spring as bright green with hints of pink. It is difficult to discern the sex of Daphniphyllum until the plants flower – flowers may appear on seperate plants during spring; green female or red male but not a flower as we might imagine as there are no petals as such. If female plants are pollinated they may produce bloomed black berries. All of that being said Daphniphyllum are grown mainly for their fabulous foliage and beautiful form.
Generally unfussy about soil type but do ensure drainage is good. Plant in a sheltered position in sun or semi-shade.
