Description
Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’ is the well known ‘Fig Tree’ most commonly planted in the U.K since it’s introduction during Victorian times. It is remarkable for it’s large jungly leaves and exotic appearance, whats more it is able to withstand drought, hot windy conditions including coastal spots despite the relatively fragile looking leaves. Capable of becoming a large busy shrub like tree it is also very easily kept to a required shape or size by pruning in mid March. What I haven’t mentioned is the bonus of the delicous figs that are produced after a warm summer which are pear shaped and a purplish brown when ripe.
Plant is a sunny position, the warmer the better if you want figs trying to avoid excessively water logged conditions, prune in spring before growth starts. Oh I should mention too that unlike many tropical figs that all Ficus carica are deciduous losing their leaves in autumn.
- Position:Full sun, sheltered.
- Soil:All soils, but avoid waterlogged areas very dry soils will need extra watering.
- Eventual Size:Up to 4 metres, but can be pruned.
- Habit:Bushy.
- Foliage:Deciduous.
- Fruit:Usually one crop of fruit per year, but sometimes two in a hot summer or under protection.
- Common Names:Fig 'Brown Turkey'
