Description
Agave nigra is a highly ornamental smaller growing agave with an open habit and chunky oblong thornless blue grey leaves tipped with a purple black thorn. Quite distinct from most other agaves Agave nigra is hybrid form, the parentage generally accepted to be a cross between Agave scabra and Agave victoriae-reginae and as such shows typical hybrid vigour growing fairly rapidly into a stunning specimen 50-60cm in diameter. We haven’t experience here of it’s cold hardiness but given the parentage Agave nigra will probably tolerate a few degrees of frost if perfectly dry but given the rarity and relatively small size I would recommend bringing undercover during freezing weather, in fact this agave would make a fabulous house or conservatory plant year round if you wish.
