Agave x arizonica

Arizona century plant

Description

Agave x arizonica is an extremely rare species native to Arizona only discovered in 1960 where it was found growing on the rocky slopes in Central Arizona north of Phoenix between Payson and Tonto. Most likely a natural hybrid between Agave chrysantha and Agave toumeyana var. Bella it is a highly ornamental Agave rarely more than 30cm in diameter forming neat roseates with narrow blue green leaves edged in burgandy and tipped with a sharp similar coloured terminal spine. The flower spike is often 3 metres tall and bears dainty yellow flowers.

We have found this Agave to be easy to grow, It tolerates frost and occasional tempreratures below freezing but must be absolutely dry in winter to prevent rot hence our recommendation you cultivate in a container and bring into a conservatory or cool glasshouse during the colder months. All the plants we have are grown from seed produced here at Big Plant Nursery.
