Chusquea gigantea

Description

Chusquea gigantea is an amazing tall growing bamboo from Chile with highly ornamental culms (canes) and masses of narrow willow like leaves. A true giant capable of reaching 10 metres tall even in U.K gardens this much loved bamboo flowered a few years ago and like many bamboos all the mature specimens tragicaly died subsequently leaving us bamboo enthusiasts hastily collecting seed. The good news is we now have a whole new generation of this amazing bamboo ready to grow and develop into the specimens previously enjoyed by us.

Chusquea gigantea is a clump forming bamboo albeit a very large clump former and as such is best planted as a stand alone specimen as a feature in a lawn or large planting. The culms are solid, robust and appear horizontally striped in shades of green, looking especially beautiful when the lower branches are removed. Best planted in fertile soil free draining in winter soils, I like to add an annual mulch of well rotted farmyard manure around the base of the plant each autumn followed by a generous helping of pelleted poultry manure each spring.

We have decided to offer 3/4 year old home grown freshly lifted root ball plants this autumn as we have found Chusquea can be replanted easily and respond well to this technique. As a buyer you will be getting a much more substantial plant too.
