Musa ‘Helen’s Hybrid’

Description

Musa ‘Helen’s Hybrid’ is an exciting variety which is rarely offered.  As the name suggests, this special Musa is a hybrid between ‘Chini Champa’ and ‘Sikkimensis’ meaning that is has excellent hardiness and flowering capability too.  A fabulous addition to the exotic garden and well worth a try, even in cooler areas.  Providing the roots are kept frost free, it is possible to overwinter ‘Helen’s Hybrid’ successfully.

As with Musa basjoo we recommend for maximum growth and size, some form of winter protection, either by wrapping the trunks in straw or hessian, even fleece to stop the cold penetrating the centre of each trunk.  Allowing the banana to regrow each spring from the height it was in the autumn rather than having to regrow from the base.  Plant in fertile soil (add organic matter and spoil with fertilizer) in a sunny to part sunny position ideally away from strong winds and enjoy the spectacular growth.

Here we offer established ‘plantlets’ which we recommend potting into 1-2L containers in a good quality multi-purpose compost, and keep in a cool, frost free location over the winter.  Keep your Musa on the dry side, watering only occasionally.
