Description
Clianthus puniceus ‘Kākā King’ is a stunning form of the rare New Zealand plant commonly known as Lobster claw or Kākā (Kākā meaning parrot) beak plant. It is a lax evergreen shrub with ferny pinnate leaves best suited to growing against a warm wall or fence. The oustanding feature is the large claw or parrot bill like bright scarlet red flowers which are produced randomly throughout the summer months.
Known by the native Maori as Kowhai Ngutu-Kākā the species Clianthus puniceus is endangered in the wild only found growing on Moturemu Island. In the UK it is best suited to milder gardens or grown in a container either outside during the summer months or as a spectactular flowering conservatory plant.
