Description
Pseudopanax lessonii ‘Gold Splash’ does what it says on the tin – it has wonderfully exotic variegation and looks like it’s splashed with gold! Much like P. lessonii ‘Cyril Watson’ in appearance but with variegated leathery, glossy leaves. The leaves are trifoliate and held on upright stems with the gold varigation standing out boldly against rich deep green.
This New Zealand native is suited to a sheltered spot in sun or partial shade. It may also be grown in containers to great effect. Like most Pseudopanax it is pretty hardy but in the coldest gardens you may experience some frost damage which can be avoided if protection is given or it is moved into a cool greenhouse. Here on the south coast it seems perfectly happy. Grow in free draining fertile soil and be sure not to over-water. Perfect in an exotic border and a must have for the collector. Can eventually reach up to 2-3m height and spread but ‘Gold Splash’ is not what I’d describe as ‘rampant’ and it may be nipped and tucked to fit in with your scheme.
Exotic, unusual and another amazing Pseudopanax.
