Description
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ is another beautiful form of the Japanese incense cedar with a lovely arching slightly pendulous habit. The new growth is spring and summer is a pure creamy white maturing slowly into lush green white in autumn and winter may turn a pinkish colour. Like it’s closely related cousin with golden new foliage Cryptomeria ‘Hungarian Gold’, ‘Sekkan Suki’ is best suited to sheltered dappled shade favoured positions in the garden Cryptomeria as the delicate new foliage can scorch in bright sun.
The books all say Japanese cedars need the holy grail of soils, acidic fertile moisture retentive but free draining soil, I have found them to be pretty amenable to ranging soil conditions, even happy on our wet clay here. Just prepare the planting site well with good quality compost and apply a generous mulch around the base of the plant once planted.
