Description
Citrus hystrix, better known as Kaffir Lime or Thai Lime is popular with fans of Asian cuisine for its pungent aromatic leaves which are used to add flavour to many dishes. For me this is great. I used to think that because of its origins in temperate and tropical South East Asia, it would be hard to grow. I guess it could be if you don’t have a conservatory or glasshouse or even a large windowspace but so far for the last 5 years I’ve had a couple of large plants here at the nursery which have spent the summers outside and winters in a cool bright and unheated glasshouse. They have been frosted and even froze one and died back (I thought it was terminal) only to grow back with vigor once the weather warmed up.
So I’d suggest if you love citrus plants and enjoy Asian cookery Citrus hystrix is well worth a try.
Best in ericaceous compost and feed fortnightly during the growing period with dilute liquid seaweed feed or citrus fertiliser.
