Blechnum discolor (Lomaria discolor)

Description

Blechnum discolor is a stunning evergreen fern sometimes known as ‘Crown Fern’ owing to the upright fronds.  Endemic to New Zealand where it is found growing in forests.  Fronds are beautiful and bright green with pale undersides and when mature, plants will develop a small ‘trunk’.  Spores are produced on erect and darker coloured fronts which have a slightly ‘shriveled appearance’.

Suitable for milder or urban gardens here in the UK.  In colder gardens bring in for the colder months and offer protection from frosts and freezing conditions.  Plant in fertile free draining but moisture retentive soil in a semi-shaded to full shaded, sheltered position.
