Description
Dryopteris erythrosora , also known as the Japanese Shield Fern has large glossy leaves with a copper tint on new growth held upright in profusion. Though basically green in colour, throughout the seasons they continually have hues of pink, red and coppery tones.
Dryopteris erythrosora is what we consider as an almost evergreen fern meaning that foliage is maintained thoughout most of the year and tends to collapse just prior to new growth each spring. It is also particularly useful in conditions that are often too bright, tolerating reasonable exposure to sun as long as the soil or compost remains moist.
Dryopteris erythrosora makes a medium to large sized specimen fern, often reaching 60cm or more high, is fully hardy and suitable for both planting in the ground or as a container specimen. Tolerant of most fertile moisture retentive, but not waterlogged soils. As with most ferns, if in doubt add good compost when planting.
