Description

Woodwardia uningemmata is without doubt one of the finest ferns possible to grow here.  A huge sweeping statement perhaps, well yes, but honestly once you have seen a mature specimen of Woodwardia unigemmata you will understand.  Partly due to its impressive size, often spreading 2-3m or more across with lush green mature fronds and bronze-red new growth and partly because it is so tough, rarely needing winter protection when you live somewhere properly chilly.

Each frond can be up to 2m long, often tipped with a young immature fern, much like the more commonly known but less hardy Charm or Walking Fern, Woodwardia radicans.  Woodwardia unigemmata differs by being larger with the characteristic bronzey new growth and hardiness.

Plant in dappled shade providing rich fertile soil (add good compost when planting) away from strong winds and of course give it some space!  Originating from South East Asia, growing on wooded hillsides, Woodwardia unigemmata look perfect planted on a slope where its magnnificent bractsfronds can cascade down, so – be creative when positioning!

Like many good things, it’s hard for us to have enough of these for sale, so best to contact us for availability.
