Description
Crambe maritima, otherwise known as ‘Sea Kale’ is not only a fabulous and robust addition to the garden but it is also edible! Often seen growing on the beach or in coastal gardens, it is highly attractive to wildlife, producing clusters of white, sweetly scented flowers during the summer which attract pollinators. This herbaceous perennial forms thick, glaucous foliage arranged in mounds. It is the very young leaves which may be eaten and you can even treat Crambe a little like Rhubarb – forcing it to produce the tastiest stems.
However, we prefer to use Crambe maritima for the beautiful ornamental display, planting amongst Kniphofia, Eryngium, Euphorbia, or other plants suited to the coast – which of course we have in abundance at Big Plant Nursery!
Plant in full sun in well drained, fertile soil for best results. Cut back during autumn.
